Sven B. Schreiber (sbs) I guess nobody will deny that this album has a lot in common with the music of Christian Vander's "Magma". In fact, the band name "Masal" is borrowed from an early 42-minute epic work released by Jean-Paul Prat back in 1982, which was pretty much a "zeuhl" track in the vein of early "Magma". The repetitive piano riffs, the rumbling chords, and the fat woodwind arrangements point it out clearly. However, there's also a glimpse of the chamber-music orientation that would dominate his later works. Favorite track: Intergalactic Tango.

Tom Landon French band Masal makes some of the classiest large-band prog, neo-classical, Canterburesque music I know-and that pretty much sums up about half my tastes. JP Prat composes beautiful music, beautifully arranged by him and superbly performed by some fine musicians. This is music with emotional depth and force. Galgal is the first and rockiest of the new series (the 1982 debut album is good too). Highly recommended. Favorite track: Intergalactic Tango.

"Galgal" (2009) is the second recording released by MASAL. It picks up where its glorious predecessor (1982) left off, with more than 50 minutes of top-class instrumental music. As with any music, you may hear traces of diverse influences, but here, they are fully accepted and perfectly integrated as the foundations for a highly personal architecture which is colourful and hard-hitting.
Also worthy of note is the remarkable interpretation by the six musicians. This time, the Master of Ceremonies has entrusted the drumsticks to a certain Jean Prat (his son, who has nothing to envy his father!), preferring the conductor's baton and the piano. So here are six absolutely remarkable long pieces culminating in a 14-minute suite, all more than equal to MASAL's classy reputation. A Classic of the Future?
