"Viens des quatre vents" (Come From The Four Winds - 2014) is the logical next step after Galgal (2009). It features the customary rhythmic rigour of Jean-Paul Prat's music, but you can sense they have also matured to genuinely work together as a group. There's a softer touch too which, far from diminishing the music's strength, encases it in velvet, with evident complicity between the guitar and saxophone rooted in the density of the trio of piano, bass and drums... Five remarkable pieces - including three over ten minutes long - in which you discover new treasures every time you listen.
Masal is decidedly convincing, with its architecture in motion weaving a hard-hitting whirl of colours. No vulgarity or pointless demonstrative virtuosity here, and no clichés, just concentrated music inviting us on a journey and whisking us beyond our own borders.
With "Viens des quatre vents", Masal's already excellent reputation can only grow.
